A ceremony of celebrations: The organization of the event, the delegates and all the other guests happily and gratefully celebrated the beginning of the POSMUN
The opening ceremony of the Porto Seguro Model United Nations 2021 took place in a hybrid fashion and simultaneously in the Albert Fortner and Reiner Dauch auditoriums, maintaining the measures of social distance. The ceremony began at eight thirty in the morning of September 22, with a cheerful video by the band Musa Parádisíaca to celebrate the meeting of the various delegations. Acknowledgement was made towards every institution and entities that helped organize the event and made it possible. Louise, Head and Master of Ceremony, together with Eric Kiatake, moderated the ceremony.
Next, Thomas Mand, director of the bilingual curriculum of the Colegio Visconde de Porto Seguro, began the day's speeches. He talked about the limitations that the pandemic has brought to the world today and the joys of being able to make the event happen, even with all the responsibilities regarding Covid-19 protocols determined by the Albert Einstein hospital.
The director also recalls that on Tuesday, September 21st, the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly took place, in which there were several relevant debates and positions related to the current world. Mr. Mand said: "the bigger the country, the greater the responsibility to make decisions", echoing the importance of united nations.
At the end of his speech, he encourages the students, saying, "it is very important that we put our heart into everything we do." and wishes everyone a wonderful event.
After that, Marcella Franzin, president of the 2019 General Assembly gave a speech, saying that she was very frustrated and upset that last year's POSMUN had to be canceled. She reports that the organizing team had put a lot of effort into making the event happen, but unfortunately it was not possible because of the pandemic.
In addition, she graced the guests at the event with her inspirational words, telling about how MUNs changed her perspective on the world, how they teach to exercise critical thinking, and how they got her where she is today.
Afterwards, it moved on to the speech of the current president of the general assembly, Gabriela Eckschmidt, who gave her opening remarks about the event. In her speech, she talked about the importance of the United Nations in solving world problems, such as appeasing wars and reducing hunger and poverty. Miss Eckschmidt says "the United Nations connects us and unites us as a global society".
After the speech, the President of the Secretary General, Carolina Lezan, and the Secretary General, Ignacio Alzueta, followed. Their speeches talked about their journey within Model United Nations and its importance in today's world.
At the end there was a Coffee Break, so that the sessions and debates could be started in their respective rooms.
After introductions were made, Miss Eckschmidt gave general orientation on the opening speeches but, due to the Covid Pandemic, they were presented via recordings.
